It is no secret that Captain America Civil War was undoubtedly a great movie, but all great things tend to have their flaws. WARNING: Spoiler Alert

The main gripe, from many sources about this movie, is the fact that Baron Zemo, the main antagonist of the movie, was a less than stellar villain. This seems to be a problem in many Marvel films, but today I’m going to touch on why Baron Zemo was the perfect villain for Captain America Civil War.

First off, let’s analyze the main plot of the movie. Over the past few films, the Avengers have racked up a pretty significant casualty count. Because of said casualty count, governments have stepped in to regulate their operations, and thus the Sokovia Accords are formed. Now we know Stark was for it, and Rogers was against it, so I won’t talk about them. Who I will talk about is Bucky. Bucky drove the plot, but it was when Zemo spoke those magic words that the plot kicked it into overdrive.

Zemo basically sat in the background as the Avengers destroyed each other for the remainder of the movie. It wasn’t until act 3, that we saw him again, and discovered his true intentions. This brought a ceasefire between Stark and Rogers, temporarily. When it was discovered that Bucky killed Tony Stark’s parents, all kinds of hell broke loose.
With that said, the reason why Baron Zemo was the perfect Civil War villain is not because of his level of diabolical intentions, his conquest, or lack for wanting world domination. He simply wanted revenge for the events that resulted in his family’s death, which unintentionally happened at the hands of the Avengers. No doomsday plot twist needed. If he were that “Big Bad” that would have taken the entire Avengers team to stop, this movie wouldn’t have been as good. It was marketed as a fight, and it ended in a fight. Although not Marvel’s best villain, Baron Zemo was Marvel’s most appropriate villain for this particular movie.
