This is an opinion piece written by guest writer Rheagen King. Images and write up contain words that may be offensive.

I only speak about my own experiences. Don’t @ me.

It’s clear to me that white people still don’t give a damn about people of color. Rather than angrily vocalize why this realization is true, I’m merely jaded and tired. I’m tired of explaining to white people why and how racism continues to heavily affect the lives of black people. I’m tired of pouring endless energy into social media platforms to write responses to white people who willingly fail to interpret racism. I’m tired of witnessing countless white people defend the actions of other racist white people because they have never been taught to think that they are accountable for their actions.

I’m simply, tired.

My fatigue settled wholly after stumbling across screenshots of a conversation exchange between Derby, KS teens. Blayten Tullis, a rising senior at Derby High School threatened to lynch a black peer. While there are those abashed by the statements Tullis made, some are unsurprisingly rising to defend his comment, including Tullis himself.

This shows me that the hatred for people of color is deeply rooted in the subconscious mind of Tullis and many people around him. (And let’s not pretend like they actually give a fuck about women.) Unnerving, but not surprising.

As a writer, every time I turn to my keyboard to type about these issues, I always struggle to come up with what to say. That is because I feel like I’ve already said it. We have made our point clearly, and that is all we can do. Which is why I’m tired.

So, no, Blayten. You don’t get a free pass. You’re a white male. You’ve been handed the majority of free passes society has to offer. This type of commentary is an explicit and unwavering example of racism at its core. Perhaps, you said sorry, but don’t expect people who experience racism daily to embrace your “apology” with open arms, however well-intended you may think yourself to be.

    Interesting…

This is from Derby Kansas, not surprised…

  • Peter Frost says:

As a white person, living in Derby, I am perturbed. Blayt is clearly upset and excused himself before he typed those words. He is clearly not racist because obviously there are multiple racists in this group chat, real racists would not take the time to give other races the time of day. Plus, what’s the big deal, he clearly apologized. Definitely, just a slip out of his character, since he was upset.

I agree, everyone should just move on from this topic. There are much more important news to talk about.

  • will.i.am says:

    wtf!?!? I’m done

  • Anna says:

To post the actual names of these people is wrong. He said it as a joke. Yes its a mean hearted joke, that should have never been said, but he has apologized and I believe is time for everyone to just move on from this topic. He is just a dumb teen.

    • Anon says:

A dumb teen that will never learn anything if he gets off with no punishment. His apology was clearly hollow. If he wants to say racist things like that then he can learn that his actions have consequences

  • Alicia says:

Great article! Very well written and much needed. Keep up the great work!

I get upset, I never use racially charged words or rhetoric. Not when I was younger and our world less self actualized, not now as an adult. To excuse this as a dumb teen is an insult to teens who’s parents taught them better, to teens who live in a community that doesn’t tolerate this type of language. Saying “I’m sorry” is easy after you’ve slung a hateful term still dripping in the blood of people of color. This should never be tolerated not in derby Kansas, not in any community of people who value one another

i really like this article and i admire the writer for being bold and putting out there what needed to be said, but i think somethings could have been rephrased. parts of this article imply that ALL white people are racist, and even though there are definitely still a disappointingly large amount of racist white people, not ALL are racist.
