After WB’s Suicide Squad debuted just a few days ago in theaters, there has been crazy & critical backlash against the film. Sure, the film had its problems, but in total it was a solid film. Spoilers ahead.

This movie had its ups and downs, so let’s start with the ups. The individual acting of each character was at least good. I thought that Will Smith’s portrayal of Deadshot was a great incarnation of the character. He did a good job of balancing his self pity and his psyche, making his character very three-dimensional.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn shocked me a little bit, but in a good way. I wasn’t expecting this version of Harley to be so much like the animated series version (the original portrayal of the character). I mean they even brought out the original suit at one point. Her portrayal was very interesting, as when she was around the Joker, she had this happiness and gullibility to her. When she was with the Squad, she seemed like there was a peace of her missing. Like an unfinished puzzle just waiting to be solved

Pretty much everyone else in this movie was a supporting character with a story that left much to be desired. Captain Boomerang was great in this film, yet he barely got any screen time.

Of course, the ultimate example of this is Jared Leto’s Joker. He did a fantastic job of distinguishing himself as his own version, and had a great vision with the character. His relationship with Harley was definitely the strongest part of the film, and the breakdown of their past at the beginning of the film was done very well.

But other than that, we didn’t see much of Leto. Most critics have been disappointed by this. In fact, a fan is pressing charges against Warner Brothers for “false advertising.” But I actually think it did some good for the film.

Having Leto’s great portrayal of the role was good to see, in fact it was almost too good. See, I think that this movie was created as a set up to the Gotham villains we all know and love. But they didn’t want to give us to much of a great character, they wanted us to leave the theater wanting more. And that’s exactly what audiences are doing. Otherwise, Leto would have overshadowed the rest of the characters with any more seems than he was granted. He already has with the minimal screen time he had.

This movie has its good things, and it definitely has its bad things as well. But I think in total I would give it about a seven out of ten (7/10) . It was definitely better than Batman v Superman, and had much more versatility of characters. Sure, that was a downfall sometimes, but at others it was the strongest thing in the film.
