Five Tips to Help Your Summer Goals

Ah. Sweet sweet summertime. Ditching your adorable sweater for a minimal bikini to keep yourself from burning up like Stannis’s daughter in season 5… yeah, summer may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but we can all agree it’s the most ideal season for achieving some well put off goals, especially if you’re a teen. As June nears its end however, so does the opportunity to accomplish all of those crazy things you had in mind for your spectacular summer. But your dream of stargazing in your backyard or starting your own blog (My current state of being. More information soon.) hasn’t totally expired. Creating a summer bucket list is the best way to make sure your summer is up to bragging standards. Here are five things you can do to ensure the rest of your summer is just that: braggable.

  1. Find inspiration

You may already have an idea of what you want the rest of your summer to look like, but perhaps you overlooked an idea someone else had. Going on to idea sharing sites like Pinterest and Tumblr will help get your creative juices flowing. My “summer bucketlist” always becomes a little more interesting when I see those cute Before I die photos.

  1. Get crafty

Get excited about your list of goals you have in mind! If you make an event out of creating your list you’ll be eager to actually check it off. Sit down with some markers and posters to spruce up your list. What’s more fun to look at: a dingy piece of paper with bullet points or bright and colorful visuals? If you’re not feeling artsy, make a Pinterest board with all of your ideas categorized to keep everything in one place. Once you have completed something on your list, put a check mark in the description box of your pin, or cross it off your poster. Hanging it up somewhere that is easily visible will also pump you up.

  1. Pace yourself

One thing that always keeps me from completing my goals is the lack of time management I instill. Most people get so caught up in the hundreds of ideas found, they add too many things to their list, or don’t make enough time in their schedule to accomplish it. There’s a lot you can do in a 2 1/2 month time span, but make sure you are capable of handling everything you envision. If you know you won’t have tons of free time due to a job or extra school work, make a smaller list and save the rest of your ideas for next year. 90% of the time the ideas you have will still be accomplish-able next season. If you do have tons of free time, but don’t know where to start, sort the list in order of importance. If something is time sensitive like a concert or color run, set dates that you want to do something. Adding a bit of organization will help keep you on track and make the process seem less overwhelming.

  1. Grab a friend

What makes jumping into a pool of jello more exciting? Pulling a friend in with you! (Or pulling a love interest, if you’re into that.) If some or all of your list can be accomplished with multiple people, grab your closest buds and do it!  If your summer bucket list is more of a self-improving/independent list, tell a friend about it and ask that they check up on you to make sure you’re getting to where you want to be. When there’s a certain amount of accountability to a task, it either discourages you or heightens your chance of success… and if the task becomes discouraging because of that obligatory feeling, is it really something you wanted to do in the first place?

  1. Have fun!

Whether it’s a personal goal or fun way to pass the time, make sure you enjoy yourself and your summer. Adding too many rules could make it seem like an assignment rather than a constructive way to accomplish goals. If something doesn’t happen on your list it’s OK. Like I said, most things can be accomplished at any time! If something comes up and you can’t pull an all nighter on Tuesday, try again Wednesday. Lastly, make sure you take your time. There’s an entire month left to feed giraffes, watch fireworks, and have a paint war. So, what’s the rush? Don’t just fall in love with the check marks. Fall in love with process.

Overall, summer is what you make out of it. Go outside and enjoy the scorching sun with a melting snow cone, or hibernate in your blanket fort while watching Netflix (I think we can all guess which scenario I’m in.). Whatever you do can be simple or significant. Get out of your comfort zone and try something you’ve never done before. Even if it’s 3 things, you’ll end your summer feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the school year. Live it up while you can. Before you know it, the academic gift known as summer break will just be called summer.
