It was a big week full of surprise outcomes and close fights. On the High School football level Bishop Carol and Northwest in a huge foreshadow of things to come. Bishop Carol and Northwest are considered to be the absolute best teams in the state. The climactic showdown was a back and forth brawl that came down to the wire when Northwest kicked a last-second field goal to take the win and knock the defending state champions down in the first week of the season starting their road back to the title a little shakey. Bishop Carol will take on Heights in another difficult match-up that will test their mettle against an elite competition. Another big game, in personal acclamation, was North vs. South where North won their first opening week game in 21 years. North High hasn’t won an opening week game since before any of their players were born. Breece Hall rushed for 107 yards and Reagan Jones threw for 139 yards that led the team to a victory over longtime rival South.

Moving up the ladder into Community College and D2. Hutchinson Community College #11 took on Last Chance U’s home team Independence Pirates #13. Hutch has come out and started hot as possible starting off the season 2-0. Hutch came out and took a commanding 37-7 lead over the Pirates. The Pirates attempted to take shots and clawed back to score 20 straight points, but that was not enough to take back the game Independence falls down to 1-1 and will take on Garden City #7 at home, another team that started this season in the top 25 JUCO teams. The Hutch Blue Dragons will look to show their dominance by playing the #2 team in the country Iowa Western. Butler coming off an incredibly rare home loss in week one of the season had a bye week this past Saturday and will look to get back on track against Highland #18.

Friends University took on Southwestern University Saturday night. Southwestern came out and laid it on the previous recipients of a full-blown beat down where they lost 73-3 in their opening game. Southwestern ran up to a 21-0 lead at halftime and the game was looking over. In the first half, Southwestern put the ball on the ground and ran it down the field until they got down to the end zone then threw it in twice and let their running back Keyshawn Wyatt run it way down the field from 38 yards out. Although it was definitely a tale of two halves as the saying goes. Southwestern went into a “drain the clock” offense where they were just pushing the ball down the field. But they ended up putting two straight fumbles on the ground one of which was returned to the house for a defensive touchdown by Jeremiah Pharms. It all came down to a last-second touchdown pass caught by Tanner Spencer to seal the game with just seconds left on the game clock.

D-1 football kicked off this weekend and K-State came out and won against their opening game against South Dakota University with a late pull away coming out and scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter to steal the win K-State will be taking on Mississippi State in week 2. Kansas showed signs of life that they haven’t shown in years. They went out and scored 20 points and forced overtime against Nicholls State but they couldn’t get a touchdown and had to settle for a field goal but Nicholls did not settle took the touchdown and the victory. Kansas will move to try and show themselves off against Central Michigan.

The NFL had its final preseason games and had to cut down their rosters to 53 men. This year they also didn’t have the two step cut so teams cut over half of their team’s players all on one day. The NFL season will kick off Thursday, September 6th where the defending champion Philidelphia Eagles will play against their NFC Conference game opponent Atlanta Falcons.
