Last week, there was a post made on twitter that stated, “Is like, being gay the new in thing to do?’ As you can imagine, some people took offence to the question.  It was, for those who are gay almost a mockery of their struggle and the negative treatment living the lifestyle.  Some even made mention that famous people who come out loose a lot of support form the main stream.  For example, Frank Ocean came out and it was stated that Jay Z said that he would never record with him.  We were informed that an actor was denied a role as superman because he was gay.

There has been a lot of support though over the years for the gay community.  Now, more than ever, we are seeing more main stream TV shows that feature gay couples.  There are countless gay movements.  However, this is not our focus.  Our point is, many gay people argue that they should not be judged on their sexuality.   It should not matter, they say.

Michael Sam came out a few months before the NFL draft about his homosexuality.  It became the top news story at the time. Michael Sam played for the university of Missouri, and is a mediocre player to say it best.  To just judge his ability, speed, etc. some annalist thought that he may not get drafted.  Many people did not know about him before he came out.   But when he made his announcement, he became a story. With the 249th pick in the 7th and final round, St. Louis selected Sam.  There were a total of 254 overall picks.  Michael Sam just got in.

But think of the possibilities; what if Sam did not get drafted?  What PR problems would that have brought to the NFL? If he had not come out, would he have been drafted?

Like most gay people argue, why does it matter? If it didn’t matter, why come out?  He could have just as well came out after the draft.  But, that would not have brought him the attention.

We hope that Michael Sam has a long and productive NFL career.  It would be great if he makes it to the Hall of Fame.  However, the tactics that he used to make it to the NFL should not be celebrated.  He exploited his homosexuality for career gain.  Well played Michael Sam, Well played!
