After an investigation into abuse allegations, Wichita State University’s Men’s Basketball Coach Gregg Marshall has announced his resignation. The decision comes after two articles released in October alleged verbal and physical abuse against Marshall. The announcement comes a little over a week before the team is set to open the 2020 season.

Former Shocker Shaq Morris made one of the first accusations on Marshall, he says Marshall punched him at practice during the 2015 season. Another accusation of Marshall’s physical abuse came in 2016-2017 when he allegedly choked then assistant coach Kyle Linsted. Other accusations listed include verbal abuse corroborated by 30 former or current players

WSU began an independent investigation that led to the firing of Gregg Marshall. During the investigation,  former WSU players spoke about Marshall. Some players statements were in favor of Marshall and some were much against him.

Marshall said later in a statement:

“This was a difficult decision, but one I feel was necessary for my family, the university and, most importantly, the student-athletes, I remain grateful for my years spent at Wichita State. I wish to thank the coaches, student-athletes, the university, the community, and all of Shocker Nation for their unending dedication, support and loyalty. I am incredibly proud of this men’s basketball program and all it has achieved over the past 14 years and am confident of its continued success.”

Director of athletics Darron Boatright says

“Our student-athletes are our primary concern. While the university acknowledges the success of the basketball program under Coach Marshall, this decision is in the best interest of the university, its student athletes and the WSU community. WSU will continue its pursuit of excellence with the help of its student-athletes, staff and loyal supporters of the basketball program.”

As part of Marshall’s resignation, the University has agreed to a contract settlement for $7.75 million to be paid over a period of six years. No state or tax dollars are involved. WSU stated that they will not release any records related to the investigation, as they are considered confidential personnel records.

WSU men’s Basketball starts November 25th with assistant coach Isaac Brown taking over coaching responsibilities.
